Stem cankers are caused by anthracnose fungi, Botrytis, Rhizoctonia, and Thielaviopsis basicola (Black Rot). In some cases, Pythium and Phytophthora may also cause stem cankers. See Root/crown diseases for appropriate fungicides. Fungicides must contact the stems to be effective and are often applied as a sprench (combination of a drench and foliar spray).
